SALT FLAT

SALT FLAT, BOLIVIA

The Salt Flat, Salar de Uyuni, is the world’s largest salt flat, spanning of over 4,000 sq. miles in south-western Bolivia. What makes this place unique has to do with the fact that unlike the traditional deserts which are typically filled with sand, the Salt Flat features very vast stretches of glistening white salt.

It came into being as a result of salt water deposits leaked from the surrounding mountains and since there is no channel to the sea, they were deposited here, the lowest point of the Altiplano plateau which in turn formed a giant lake.

The sun is, however, extremely strong in the Bolivian Altiplano. It turns to become very cold at sun set and therefore, sun shades, gloves, scarfs and hats come highly recommended for such climates.
